They must have good written/spoken English before they are allowed to become a resident let along citizen.

Loop hole though, you can become a NZ citizen easier than you can become a Australian citizen and gain entry into Australia that way!

Tighter laws need to be put in place and lot just let anybody gain entry to our wonderful country without going through proper tests like:

I and my husband are both immigrants from European countries. We speak read and write English as well as 2 other languages. It took time! He came out later than I did, in his 20s, and he still has a few problems with some things. But,he is understood by everyone. He didn't speak a word of English when he arrived, but he learnt a lot more than the language just by living here. Give them a go! I gave him one and we've been married 30 years this April. He was a productive person for 20 years and he loves it here as much as I do. Go Aussie!

Good for you, Margreta. The hard-working European migrants have been the backbone of this country and we have them to thank for bringing in all their delicious food and cultural diversity. Such migrants (as yourself and your good husband) are ALWAYS welcome here. We are so happy for those of you who have worked so hard and believe you deserve EVERY success you have attained. It is such a pity when others come out here, though, to go straight onto welfare, or bringing their political hatreds with them.

I think if they want to come to Australia to live, they should learn to speak english BEFORE they come here.

We came here and were only too keen to learn the language and way of life. Multiculturalism has splintered the population. Fancy thousands of Sri-Lankans barracking for Sri-Lanka in the cricket - here in Australia. Amounts to treason that does. Just as well we still won.

Absolutely! In fact, I believe that people who really want to come out to Australia should be made to learn English and be educated in our culture, our laws and our "general way of life BEFORE they hit our shores." This does not mean they have to forego their own culture, but if they choose to live here, they must respect our culture and our laws and NOT bring their racial hatreds and religious intolerance with them ... none of these types of migrants are wanted or welcome here. If you don't like our way of life or our Christian values, stay out of this country!
