Yes, as long as the car industry gets off their rear end and produce a smartcar/renewable that can run at cost less than the petrol type now.

Assuming hypothetically i could afford a new car, i will consider it, laugh at the thought and then go buy something suitable for my family

No,they are not smart enough Yet! Maybe in around 10 years.
