Tips for Writing Effective Polls

Writing a question for a poll can be trickier than it seems. The following should offer you some assistance in structuring your questions to improve your chances of seeing that elusive 'suggested by' credit alongside your screen name.

  1. Think 'Rated PG'.
Everyone should be able to enjoy the WDYT QuickPolls. Our preference is for suggestions that are suitable across age groups.

  2. Write for a national audience
The strongest responses will come from the broadest audience. Preference will be given to topics and questions that most Australians can offer an opinion about.

  3. Write objective questions.
Keep your question simple, and avoid using too many strong adjectives, or information that may unfairly influence the outcome of a poll. Unbiased questions will yield the most accurate results.

  4. Cover the possibilities when writing your responses.
There are likely to be people out there who think like you, but inversely, there are also people who have the directly opposite view. Consider the diversity of the population in creating likely responses. Our editing team may offer alternative responses to cover any gaps.

  5. Original ideas obtain more votes.
To keep the site fresh and interesting for our regular visitors, we will try not to publish too many QuickPolls on the same topic e.g your favourite TV show. Polls that are original will have a greater chance of gaining voter participation. We love asking questions that have never been asked before.

  6. Check the accuracy of your information, your grammar and, your spelling.
Your poll could be read by hundreds or thousands of Australians so be sure to check that the information you have is correct before you submit it for consideration. Sometimes poor grammar or spelling can be the difference between publishing one suggestion over another!

  7. Time to write a QuickPoll!
Here are some classic openers to help get your creative juices flowing:
    • What do you think..
    • Who do you think..
    • How often do you?.
    • What is your view on?
    • Do you think that?
    • Why would you?.
    • When do you ?.
    • What was the first/last time?.
    • Are you?.
    • In your opinion?
    • Of the following?
    • What's your favourite?
    • Do you think Australia should?.
